This past weekend, America saw a new Miss America crowned. A beautiful woman of Indian desent. It wasn’t even hours after Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, was crowned that Twitter errupted with racist comments that would make anyone disgusted. BuzzFeed collected a group of them: http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/a-lot-of-people-are-very-upset-that-an-indian-american-woman?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=buzzfeed
It easy to put ones into the position to see, maybe, why people would have a problem… actually, there is no excuse that would allow this to slide as acceptable behavior by any American. I can honestly say that I am disturbed that people take to Twitter to vent their racisim. Nina Davuluri is beautiful and probably as elegant as any of the women competeing. She breaks the traditional standards that Miss America has to be caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes. What people fail to realize is that this country is constantly evolving. We are becoming more and more diverse with each passing day.
The fact of the matter is that it should not matter on what nationality you are from as long as you were born in America. It is the Miss America pageant, afterall. Nina was quoted saying “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.” You can be any descent and still be American and that is what the ignorant people fail to realize.
It just goes to show that if America can embrace having an African American president and they can embrace having a Indian American Miss America than we are moving the right step towards embracing diversity of all backgrounds. The things that need to get left behind are the racists attitudes and the disgusting comments that people chose to tweet. America is one big melting pot that has all sorts of opportunities. As an American, it saddens me greatly that we still have racism rising above, that it can’t be left to the past. Hopefully one day it will not matter.
